Back to Los Angeles, in as many pieces I was in before I left, which is enough for tonight. I missed some strong rain, sounds like, and I’m bummed I didn’t get to witness it. I only get so many windswept homeland days, and am finder it hard enough to enjoy them as I used to in light of my leaking innocence into space.

However, my generous sensory consolation prize was driving through Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, NY yesterday with my beloved cousins. (Thanks Pete, Julie & Andrew for making a potentially grim visit so enjoyable)

Today there is a new Lucinda Williams album out there. That is enough reason, at least for today, to be thankful I was born a self-aware mammal.

I’m almost sorry to see Randy Newman win another Oscar for his film work, as it just makes it certain that the culturally ignorant (and the young schmucks) will never associate him with his brilliant work as a singer-songwriter from the 70 s on. He might be the best in the game, possessed of searing, wicked satirical chops. His album of a few years back, Harps And Angels, was edgier than all the Strokes records put together.

Amazing But True #34

"It’s not the side-effects of the cocaine / I’m thinking that it must be love…"

I am not knocked from my tracks easily, but the incident pictured above - the great David Bowie appearing to continue to sing after a fan has somehow managed to fling a lollipop up and under his eyelid - is as close to impossible as you can get.  As far as my perspective, this is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen.  And I was there for keyboard cat. (Little-known fact:  Bowie was able to segue right into the full ten-minute version of ‘Station to Station’ without fussing with the lollipop, and afterward was heard to say his brain could taste the artificial grape THROUGH the stick, THROUGH his eye…)

Why am I supposed to feel guilty about thinking Meg White was an all-timer rock drummer, again? Because she “never had a lesson”? Isn’t that kinda not rock-and-roll, to have such an attitude? She rocks, duh.

Nothing can stop me now.

Nothing can stop me now.

Were I to be handed some grim medical death sentence, I believe I would take the opportunity to become addicted to heroin, opium, everything. Why not?
